Staghorn Sumac is named after a male deer because of the reddish brown hairs that cover young stems which resemble the velvet covering on the stag's horns. The fruit is attractive with pyramidal clusters that ripen to a bright red in the fall. The fall foliage is also outstanding with shades of bright orange and red. Staghorn Sumac tolerates various soil types but does need well drained soils. The berries are an excellent food source for birds. The plant is dioecious, needing both male and female plants to produce the fruit. To get fruit on a female plant, a male plant must be near.
